International & Out-of-Town Patients in Mexico City
A logistics, lodging and preparation guide for patients traveling from other cities or countries for eye surgery with Dr. Sebastián Diener in Mexico City.
Why patients from other cities and countries choose Dr. Diener
Dr. Sebastián Diener regularly welcomes patients who travel from other states in Mexico and from abroad to receive ophthalmology care and oculoplastic surgery at his office in Mexico City. If you are also planning to travel for your surgery, this guide for international patients will help you organize your arrival, your stay and your recovery.
Before traveling for your surgery
Before your procedure you will need a complete preoperative evaluation, which includes laboratory tests and, in most cases, a cardiology or internal medicine evaluation in addition to your ophthalmology evaluation with Dr. Diener. These studies can be done in your home city or here in Mexico City; our coordination team will let you know which studies you need depending on your procedure.
If you prefer to complete your studies and evaluations in Mexico City, we recommend arriving at least 2 to 3 days before your surgery to allow enough time for this process.
Recommended lodging in Mexico City
Dr. Diener's office is located in Insurgentes San Borja, a well-connected area of Mexico City. For your comfort during recovery, we recommend staying at a hotel or accommodation nearby, preferably in the Colonia del Valle area or surroundings, with elevator access and easy travel by car or taxi/Uber to the office.
Companions: important information
It is essential that you travel with a trusted family member or companion. Your companion must be available throughout the surgery and your immediate recovery, be responsible for your transport back to your lodging, and support you with basic activities during the first few days. If the patient is a minor, a parent or legal guardian must be present with their ID and, if applicable, the minor's birth certificate.
Transportation recommendations
We recommend using authorized taxis or apps like Uber for your transportation, especially on surgery day and during recovery. Avoid public transportation in the days following your procedure. You will not be able to drive on the day of your surgery: your companion must arrange your transport.
Payments and appointment policy
To learn the cost of your procedure, available payment methods and the cancellation policy, please check directly with the office coordinator when booking your appointment. We recommend having an additional budget available on surgery day, as in some cases an adjustment during the procedure may be necessary.
Recovery and follow-up in Mexico City
After your surgery you will need to attend postoperative follow-up appointments at the office, so it's important to plan your stay in the city accordingly. For procedures such as blepharoplasty, see our procedure-specific protocol for international patients, where you will find the recommended follow-up schedule.
You can also check our general recovery tips and see which insurance providers work in direct billing or by reimbursement with the office.
Frequently asked questions for international and out-of-town patients

How many days should I plan to stay in Mexico City?
It depends on the procedure. As a general reference, plan a few days before surgery for evaluations (if done in Mexico City) and at least 7 to 10 days afterward for your postoperative follow-up visits. Your doctor will give you the specific schedule for your procedure.
Where can I stay near the office?
We recommend looking for lodging in the Colonia del Valle area or around Insurgentes San Borja, with elevator access and easy travel by car or taxi/Uber.
