Cataract surgery performed by Dr. Sebastián Diener uses phacoemulsification, the most commonly performed ophthalmic procedure in the world. It involves replacing the clouded natural lens with a high-technology intraocular lens (IOL) through a minimal incision, generally without the need for stitches. For cataract surgery, Dr. Diener offers a complete biometric evaluation to select the lens best suited to your lifestyle, including premium lenses that reduce or eliminate the need for glasses. The surgery is performed on an outpatient basis in a certified operating room, with topical anesthesia and a short recovery time.
The process begins with a complete ophthalmic evaluation that includes high-precision optical biometry, corneal topography, and anterior chamber measurement — essential data for calculating the correct intraocular lens power. Several lens options are available: monofocal lenses, which correct a single distance and usually require reading glasses; multifocal or extended depth-of-focus (EDOF) lenses, which reduce the need for glasses at multiple distances; and toric lenses for patients with astigmatism.
Cataract surgery cost: prices start at $34,000 MXN per eye. The final price may vary depending on each patient’s characteristics, the intraocular lens used, and the hospital where the surgery is performed. The intraocular lens is chosen based on each patient’s characteristics, with the goal of achieving the best possible visual results. You will receive a personalized quote at your evaluation appointment.
After cataract surgery, most patients return to their daily activities within 24 to 72 hours, with full refractive stabilization occurring within 4 to 6 weeks. Dr. Diener provides a standardized postoperative follow-up to verify proper healing, monitor intraocular pressure, and confirm the expected visual outcome.
It is common to be prescribed antibiotic and anti-inflammatory eye drops during the first few weeks to promote healing and prevent infection. Patients are advised to avoid water and dust contact with the operated eye, as well as intense physical exertion during the first few days. Cataract surgery performed by Dr. Diener uses state-of-the-art technology that delivers predictable visual outcomes and a safe experience for every patient.
Pre-operative tests: before surgery we perform refraction, a dilated eye exam, optical biometry and corneal topography. We also review your medical conditions and medications (for example, tamsulosin).
Alternatives: in early cataracts, observation and updating your glasses prescription may be enough. No eye drops can dissolve a cataract; definitive treatment is surgical.
Risks: cataract surgery is safe, but not risk-free. The most common issues are manageable: dry eye, discomfort and mild inflammation. Posterior capsule opacification may appear later and is treated with YAG laser, and night-time halos are more common with multifocal lenses. Serious complications such as intraocular infection, retinal detachment or vision loss are rare.
Seek urgent care if you have severe pain, sudden vision loss or flashes of light.
General information; it does not replace a personalized medical evaluation.
Is cataract surgery painful?
No. It is performed with topical anesthetic drops; the eye becomes numb and the patient remains awake and comfortable. The vast majority report no pain during the procedure.
How long does the surgery take and what care should I take during recovery?
The procedure takes between 15 and 30 minutes, and vision improves within the first 24-72 hours, with full refractive stabilization within 4 to 6 weeks. During the first few days, it’s important to avoid rubbing the eye and contact with water, soap, or dust, as well as excessive bending or intense physical exertion; apply the eye drops prescribed by your doctor and use a protective eye shield at night if recommended. Most patients can walk, watch television, and carry out light activities from the first day, gradually resuming their normal routine under Dr. Diener’s supervision.
What is the difference between a monofocal and a multifocal lens?
A monofocal lens corrects a single distance (usually far vision) and requires reading glasses. A multifocal or EDOF lens allows clear vision at multiple distances with less dependence on glasses, though it may cause halos around lights in some patients. The choice depends on the visual profile and daily activities.
Can a cataract come back?
No. Once the cloudy lens is removed, it does not return. A percentage of patients may develop clouding of the posterior capsule (secondary cataract) months later, which is treated in the office with a YAG laser in a few minutes, without surgery.
When should I have surgery? Do I have to wait until the cataract is mature?
There’s no need to wait. The surgical indication is determined based on the impact on your quality of life and the findings during the examination. Waiting too long can make surgery more difficult and prolong recovery.
